Dean hadn’t felt right for months. Part of his entire being, his reason for existence, was to watch out for his little brother. It made him so antsy, knowing that there was something he ought to be doing; it was driving him crazy. Hunting helped, but it was always there, like that feeling of leaving the stove on, only worse.
He watched from across the street as Sam laughed and pulled a pretty blonde up next to him, smiling and pressing his mouth to hers. He didn’t know which was worse; worrying Sam was in danger, or knowing the truth.

A/n: Whoa with the angst train. ;D
When Sam ran away to California, he left behind four things: his electric razor, a couple of cd‘s that Dean would never listen to, a book, and a half-eaten bag of peanut m and m’s.
Dean didn’t care for nuts in his chocolate as a general rule, especially peanuts, but he kept popping the oddly shaped candies inside his mouth until the empty bag crinkled between his fingers.
On the way out of town, he bought the biggest yellow bag he could find. Every bite of chocolate and peanuts left a bitter taste in his mouth. He ate them anyway.

Date: 2008-03-21 04:05 am (UTC)Interesting look at Dean while Sam was at Stanford. I especially liked this bit:
It made him so antsy, knowing that there was something he ought to be doing; it was driving him crazy. Hunting helped, but it was always there, like that feeling of leaving the stove on, only worse.
Yeah, it really had to get under Dean’s skin that Sam was out of his reach, away from his protection. Like Dean had lost his purpose but not really, his purpose was just harder to fulfill.
Aftertaste
Oh, Dean. Nifty and well-executed idea to have Dean pick up the M&M habit because they reminded him of Sam.
Favorite lines:
On the way out of town, he bought the biggest yellow bag he could find. Every bite of chocolate and peanuts left a bitter taste in his mouth. He ate them anyway.
Ow.
*hugs poor Dean*

You're rocking the bitter Dean tonight, McGee. And I like it.
