samndeanfestish for the Fall Fandom Free-For-All. Jared being notorious for not being able to keep his mouth shut, accidently outs himself and Jensen at a convention.
Jared loves his fans. No really, all actors say they love their fans, but Jared loves each and every one of them. The short, the tall, fat or skinny, young or old, he connects with each one he meets, like they’re just another so-in-so he grew up down the street from. Yeah, he knows they can get a little obsessed, but for some reason that only makes him smile that much bigger, laugh that much louder. Like, these people probably know more about him than his own brother and they still love him. Its ridiculous and overwhelming and Jared loves every single second of it. He feels like they get him, you know?
Conventions are pretty much his favorite part of this whole gig. His Mama’s always telling everybody how much of a ham he was growing up, but if she saw him at one of these things, she’d realize that the phase had never really ended. Bright hot lights and his own voice bouncing off the back wall, answering questions like, “What’s your favorite Sam line?” to “Twizzlers or Sour Straws?” Like he could even answer that. Its awesome.
Then someone asks, “If Jensen hadn’t been able to play the role of Dean, who would you rather play him?” and Jared just sort of locks up. The microphone almost slips out of his hand, sweaty and shaking, and all of a sudden the lights are too bright and there are a thousand strange faces staring at him, and this is the first time he’s ever wished he wasn’t the center of attention.
Someone behind the stage coughs and Jared’s spine goes taut. Answer the question, Jay. Just answer the damn question. “Um,” his voice sounds alien, even to him. “If Jensen hadn’t been able to play Dean…” He taps the microphone against his chin, feigning pondering the girl’s (Melanie’s) question. His left leg is bouncing up and down nervously and he’s chewing a raw spot on the inside of his lip.
“If Jensen hadn’t gotten the part of Dean, we might’ve never…” Jared swallows the lump in his throat. He can’t even. That’s just not something he even wants to entertain the possibility of. He looks up at the questioner, wondering how in the fuck he’s going to salvage this mess, and as soon as his eyes hit the crowd, Jared knows. He doesn’t know how to explain it; its just a feeling. A really strong feeling tight in his belly and in his chest.
They know.
Melanie, the girl that asked him the question, just gives him this sweet smile, hands the microphone back, and takes her seat. There’s sweat dripping off his face at this point, he can see the little splatter marks on the tile beneath him. They know. They know.
Then why do they all look so calm, so happy? And that’s just it, they are happy. They’re happy for him. These people, these strangers as most people would call them, are really happy for him. They’re happy that he’s happy.
Jared wipes his sweaty hands on the front of his shirt and takes a deep breath, shakes the hair out of his eyes and turns the full force of his smile on them. He is happy.
“Who’s next?”
