“My dad’s an astronaut.”  He‘d tell them, or sometimes, “He‘s in the C.I.A. but don’t tell anybody or he’ll have to kill you.” 

Mostly the other kids ate his stories up, but there was always one that called him on it, embarrassing him in front of the whole class.

Soon it didn’t matter though because they’d move again, a new motel room to make into a home, a new school, and a new life to make up. Soon, Sam wouldn’t be able to tell stories from truth, and if he secretly liked it that way, he kept it to himself.
