happy 4th of July - have a samndean!
Just a little 4th of July text fiction I wrote for bigfiction 'cause she was feeling chitty.
They sky overhead lit up in blinding golds and purples, thundering around them as Dean tossed the match into the grave, the scent of decayed flesh, lighter fluid, and gun powder hanging in the air. “Now that’s what I’m talking about.” He grinned, propped up by his shovel as another set of fireworks exploded in a burst of color, painting the pitch dark sky.
Sam smiled and dragged the back of his hand across his forehead, staring more at the eight year old boy expression on Dean’s face than the display going on over their heads. “Didn’t realize it was the fourth already.”
“Yeah,” Dean sighed, hopping up on the car, laying out on the hood with his arms behind his head. “Kinda sucks we never got the barbecue and sparklers bit.” Sam gave a short nod and slid onto the hood beside him, Queen playing low on the radio as they watched the rest of the show together in silence.
When it was all over, after the thick layer of smoke from the grand finale had cleared and they were alone again in the quiet and the dark, Sam rolled onto his side, facing Dean, and slipped his hand in between the layer’s of Dean’s clothing until he could feel the light thump of his heartbeat beneath his fingertips, let his head fall against Dean’s shoulder.
“Sam,” Dean warned, muscles tightening beneath Sam. “Don’t.”
Then Sam was curling his fingers around Dean’s collar, drawing him closer, brushing his mouth against Dean’s; he could taste the desperation on Dean’s lips, sharp and bitter, and he licked it away greedily. “Next year,” Sam mumbled against Dean’s lips, hands and fingers clutching desperately at every inch of Dean, as if he was already starting to slip away. “Barbecue and sparkles next fourth of July. Promise.”
